The Republic of Kazakhstan's Chairman of the Roads Committee, Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development Mr. Sairanbek Barmakov and representatives from the Tourism Industry Committee, Ministry of National Economy, and the Tourism Department of Almaty region, on 14 October 2020, attended the virtual meeting with the ABEC team to discuss the findings of the Economic Impact Assessment for the Almaty-Issyk Kul Alternative Road and elaborating the way forward. The findings of assessment were presented by the Economic Development Group’s Chairman, Mr. Glen Weisbrod. A similar meeting was held earlier with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic on 30 September 2020. The assessment provides several options for alternative roads with tangible figures and credible estimations on the economic impact and financial feasibility for both countries. The need for conducting the Economic Impact Assessment was earlier raised by both governments at the ABEC Subcommittee meetings and Kazakh-Kyrgyz Intergovernmental meetings and coursed by the Almaty-Bishkek Economic Corridor Tourism Master Plan, which was published in December 2019. Mr. Sairanbek Barmakov delivered opening remarks and ABEC national coordinator Almas Baitenov moderated the meeting together with ADB economist Kristian Rosbach.
